Performance EDU Evaluation - Thomas Test

Thomas Test:

The Thomas Test is a passive range of motion test that we, at PerformanceEDU, like to use to test the range of motion of the musculature that crosses/inserts at the hip, knee, and ankle joints in flexion.

Passing criteria:

  1. No pain while performing the test

  2. Extended leg lays flat on the table

  3. Ankle hangs directly under the knee

  4. Hip knee and ankle joints are observably well aligned with one another

Passing all these criteria displays the passive range of motion needed to perform compound exercises using the lower extremities. Failing any of these criteria gives the coach a good idea of where mobility restrictions or motor control issues will occur during functional movements, and how to address them.
